Driving Assessment

The Driving Health Inventory (DHI) is a computer based assessment that looks at the prerequisite skills necessary for safe driving. The assessment assists with determining if a person has deficits in one of seven skills needed for safe driving. The occupational therapist utilizes the information from the DHI as well as objective information from other clinical assessments to determine barriers in reaction time, spatial relations, visual scanning and basic cognitive functions needed for safe driving. The entire driving assessment includes use of the following clinical tools:
Motor Free Visual Perceptual Test 3rd Edition (MVPT-3)
Traffic Sign Recognition
Cognitive Function Examination
Assessment of functional strength, mobility and coordination
Completion of the DHI - A validated and standardized computer-based tool developed by Loren Steplin of Trans Analytics

After the driving assessment, the occupational therapist will make a recommendation to the patient and/or family and physician for further intervention by an occupational therapist to address deficit areas found in the assessment, to not drive at night, to only drive short distances, to set up and in-car driving evaluation with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), or other recommendation as appropriate.
