Marion is the county seat of Marion County. The downtown area is notable for some fine old buildings. The stone Elgin House Apartments in Marion used to be a hotel and has now be transformed into a beautiful bed and breakfast. The Marion County Courthouse in Marion (built in 1906) is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Municipal Building is much newer and combines the city offices and the Municipal Auditorium. It is an impressive expression of the optimism of the generation that built it. As you travel east from downtown, you cross a small creek running through the city park, pass the local museum, and climb a steep ridge. The Hill School is the oldest school building still in use as a school in Kansas. North of this school is a comfortable neighborhood with many beautiful older homes.
